Oncology

 

The purpose of this specialty residency is to expose the resident to all areas of cancer patient care: inpatient, outpatient, hospice, palliative care, clinical research, symptoms management, etc. Experiences may include management of various malignant solid tumors and lymphomas, acute and chronic leukemias, stem cell transplant patients, dosing/compounding/monitoring of all chemotherapeutic agents, promotion of the rational use of colony-stimulating factors, and appropriate supportive cancer care. Pharmacists completing this residency will obtain expert skills and competencies necessary to obtain an administrative, academic, or clinical role in the field of oncology pharmacy practice and may allow the pharmacist to be eligible to become a board certified specialist in oncology pharmacy (BCOP).

 

 

 

 

Here is an example of the training experience a PGY2 Oncology resident from John's Hopkins would receive:

  •  

  • Management of a diverse group of solid and hematologic malignancies

  • Familiarity with investigational cancer treatments as well as standard of care

  • Multidisciplinary patient care rounds

  • Patient and caregiver education

  • Multidisciplinary conferences including: Oncology Grand Rounds, Oncology Journal Club, Oncology Pain Conference, and disease-specific case conferences

  • Teaching opportunities within the cancer center as well as the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy
